3 Mice Prevention Tips to Keep Your Home Mouse-Free this Fall
As fall and winter approach, it’s important to have mouse prevention on your mind. The seemingly harmless rodents find their way inside during the fall to escape fields as they're being harvested.
Luckily, there are a few steps you can take to prevent mice.
3 Tips for Easy Mouse Prevention
From home repairs to natural deterrents, we’ve got a few tips for keeping your house mouse-free this winter.
1. Close off entry points
Keeping garage and exterior doors closed can go a long way in preventing mice. You’ll also want to seal any openings larger than ¼-inch in diameter, checking foundation, water pipes, and vents for points of entry.
2. Remove food sources
Mice come in because they want food (and shelter). Put food away after meals, wash dishes promptly, and store food in plastic, rather than cardboard, containers.
3. Enlist the powers of peppermint oil
Peppermint oil has been shown to deter mice (although, keep in mind it may not do much for a current infestation). Try mixing two teaspoons of 100% pure peppermint oil with one cup of water in a spray bottle. Spray on walls and floors for the ultimate mouse deterrent and air freshener! You can also put five to six drops of 100% pure peppermint oil on a cotton ball to double up defenses in areas highly prone to mice.
Of course, if the mice have already invaded, you’ll need to identify and remove them.
Identifying a Mouse Infestation
Keep your eyes and ears open for these signs of a mouse infestation to begin removal steps early:
- Droppings
- Gnaw marks on wires, drywall, and other material
- Nests (often made from fine shredded paper or other fibrous material)
- Musky Odor
It’s as easy as that! Taking a few prevention steps and staying aware for signs of a mouse infestation can help keep your home mouse-free this fall and winter.
